LIU High School Scholars Program, formally S.C.A.L.E.
Secondary Collegiate Articulated Learning Experience
History of S.C.A.L.E. at Lawrence High School:
The Scale program is a college credit program for high school students offered through C.W. Post College, Long Island University. In the program, art students can earn three credits per semester in art classes. Lawrence High School started the art program with Mr. Verone and Ceramics & Sculpture in 2002, then in 2008, Ms. Del Guidice added Digital Design and last year, In 2009 Mrs. Ganes added Drawing and Painting as new courses.
About the Drawing and Painting Options:
In the 2009 fall semester, 10 students enrolled in the 3D Sculpture Seminar Course taught by Mr. Verone and 10 students enrolled in the Scale Drawing class taught by Mrs. Ganes. The drawing course, a new addition to the program featured figure drawing. A great feature of the program is that the college professors come and critique student artwork in each subject and assist with instruction to give us the feeling of being in a college class. In the 2010-2012, we were able to offer the Painting Workshop in which 10 students explored working with color. A unique feature was a trip to the campus where students painted landscapes on location from nature. In addition, they created still life paintings in color. Each participant enjoyed the opportunity to create more advanced works and have them evaluated as a group with Mrs. Ganes and Professor Seung Lee.

Mrs. Ganes explained, “They did a lot of figure drawing working from the live model which has improved observational drawing skills. Twice they went on trips to C.W .Post to work from a model who posed for two hours each time and in December they had a model pose here at the high school in the Dance Studio. “
